Ivy Goulart

Ivy Goulart (pronounced e-v) is a Brazilian actor, producer and filmmaker, born in Urussanga, Santa Catarina, on May 15, 1975.

Goulart started his artistic career in 1995 as an actor on the stages of Paraná, Brazil.  He gradually discovered and branched out into other means of expression, like movies and television.

He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees in Filmmaking and Education, at the Gama Filho University, in Rio de Janeiro, where he discovered his calling as a director, thus starting to build his Filmography.

In 2005, after completing 10 years of his career, Goulart was honored by the City Hall and City Council of Urussanga, receiving the 'Honor of Merit' award, for representing his hometown artistically.

The Actor

Goulart studied theater in Curitiba, Brazil, and worked in the following plays:

  • 'Trance' (1996), by Ronald Rad, directed by Marley Mello, in the role of Anselmo;
  • 'The Magic Flute' (1997 and 1998), by Mozart, directed by Marcelo Marchioro, in the role of Papagueno;
  • 'The Trojans' (1998), by Euripides, directed by Guaraci Martins, in the role of Helen of Troy;
  • 'Where Have You Been at Night?' (1999), written and directed by Edson Bueno, in the role of Ariel;
  • 'La Serva Padrona' (2000), by Pergolesi, directed by Edson Bueno and Conductor Osvaldo Colarusso, in the role of Vespone;
  • 'Gente Criança' (2001 and 2002), by Rosy Greca, directed by Fátima Ortiz, in the role of Clown Pipoca.

In cinema, he acted in the feature film 'The Last Battle' (2005), by João Stefan, in the role of Lucas, and participated in the short film 'Four Friends Talking about Love' (2000), by Gil Barone.

On TV, Goulart worked on the Globo Television Network, participating in the sitcom 'Os Normais' (2003) and in the soap opera 'The Color of Sin' (2004).  He was part of the cast of the soap opera 'Belíssima' (2005 and 2006), by Silvio de Abreu.

The Educator and Writer

Goulart developed the project 'Theater Workshop' for the poor, having taught in Urussanga (Santa Catarina), Curitiba (Paraná), Cascavel (Paraná) and Paranaguá (Paraná), from 1999 to 2002.

In 2006, he wrote the monograph 'Film in Education', during his graduate course in Education, at the Gama Filho University.

As a screenwriter, he wrote: Black Gold, Illuminations, Edilamar, which was selected for the project 'Revealing the Many Brazils - Year I' (2004), by the Ministry of Culture of Brazil, Tracking The Cultural Convoy, Beyond The Light and Francisco De Assis.  He also wrote 'Urussanga', which received the 'Production Incentive Award', for best screenplay, in the 3rd Catarina Documentary Festival (2004).

The Filmmaker

As a filmmaker, he produced and made five films that participated in several Brazilian and international film festivals and showings.  See Filmography for details of each film, including screenings and awards.

The Curator

Goulart was invited by Dr. Domício Coutinho, president of the Brazilian Endowment for the Arts (BEA), in New York, to be the curator of the film project 'Brazilian Film on Thursdays' (2008 and 2009).

The project promotes the screening of classic, independent and successful Brazilian films, every Thursday, aiming to make known the national film industry.  After the screenings, Goulart leads discussions with the audience, accompanied by special guests like: Guilherme Parreiras, Micki Mihich and Stela Brandão.

On September 29, 2008, Coutinho and Goulart officially inaugurated the 'Nelson Pereira dos Santos Hall', at BEA.  The filmmaker Nelson Pereira was present at the ceremony, where he was decorated with the 'Machado de Assis Medal of Merit', from the Brazilian Union of Writers of New York (UBENY).
